On the occasion that an HTML file is accidentally overwritten on the server, the overwritten file must be retrieved from the website backup CD. The website backup CDs are located in 726 Lewis Hall.
The purpose of retriving an HTML file is to maintain the integrity of the website.
This policy applies to all University of Missouri-Columbia Archives staff members and student workers.
4-1. The Technical Services Archivist is responsible for retrieving HTML files as s/he is informed of the need; however, any staff member may follow the procedure.
5-1. CD - short for Compact Disk, a media for storing digital information.
5-2. FTP - short for File Transfer Protocol, the Internet protocol for sending files.
5-3. HTML - short for Hypertext Markup Language, a document-layout and hyperlink-specification language. It defines the syntax and placement of special, embedded directions that tell a Web browser how to display the contents of a document.
5-4. Local Web Site - The HTML files and directories resident on the local WS-FTP directory on the hard-drives of individual PCs in the University Archives. When files have been edited, reviewed, and approved they are transferred to the Remote Web Site using WS-FTP.
5-5. Remote Web Site - The HTML files and directories for the University Archives Web site maintained on a Web File Server by UM-Systems Computer Support unit.
5-6. WS-FTP - A program used to transfer files from a local PC to the UM-System Web file server.

6-2. Open FTP.
6-3. In FTP, get to D: in the Local System field (drop-down box) by scrolling down in the directory and clicking on [-d-]:

6-4. In FTP (directory D:\ in the Local System) open the archives folder:

NOTE: On some CDs this step may be skipped.
6-5. In FTP (directory D:\archives in the Local System) highlight the file that needs to be replaced on the server:

6-6. Click the right transfer arrow to copy the highlighted file to the Remote Site /www/archives directory (the server).
NOTE: In 2002 the /www/archives directory changed to just /.
6-7. Click Yes if there is a pop-up box, such as the following:

6-8. Close FTP.
6-9. Return CD to its place in the backup CD file in 726 Lewis.
