(C:1/141/7)

Born in Waltham, Massachusetts, Jonas Viles came to the University of Missouri in 1902, as an instructor for the Department of History, which had recently separated from Political Science. Viles remained at the University for the rest of his career, serving as chair of the department from 1928-1937, and retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1945. In 1939, Viles wrote a centennial history of the University with the assistance of several contributors. From 1907 to 1916, Viles served as Vice- President for The State Historical Society of Missouri and remained a trustee of that organization until the time of his death.
