Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records generated by the administration and faculty of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Engineering's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, committee files, manuscripts of faculty publications, faculty service records, annual departmental reports, consulting reports, curriculum information, accreditation record, course materials, photographs, blueprints, and various printed and duplicated material.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:9/11/1
This Series contains seven engineering graphics textbooks and workbooks by Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, Alfred S. Gaskell, (1963-1976). These materials were developed by Professor Gaskell for his courses in engineering graphics and drawing, conceptual design, and interior design.

This Series contains Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering faculty service records, annual departmental reports, departmental committee files, consulting reports, curriculum information, accreditation records, and information concerning University of Missouri-Kansas City graduate and undergraduate engineering course offerings, (1938-1978).

Series 3. - C:9/11/5 (A84-99)
This Series contains course materials generated by Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering John Love Jr., (ca. 1960-1980). Included in the Series are course schedules, quizzes, lecture notes, special problem assignments (and solutions), home work handouts, and exams.

Series 4. - C:9/11/6 (A84-49)
This Series contains records of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering gathered by James J. Smith, Professor of Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1968-1984) (some documents pre-date Professor Smith's tenure at UMC). Included in the Series are items of correspondence concerning development of the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and related matters, (ca. 1938), printed reports entitled The Arkansas Story: A Demonstration in Energy Conserving Home Construction, and Mathematical Games: The Persistence and Futility of Efforts to Trisect the Triangle. Also included in the Series are sixty-two black-and-white photographs of subjects such as machinery used by the department and construction of the Engineering Laboratory as well as two blueprints of the Laboratory.

Series 9. - C:9/11/11
This Series contains miscellaneous printed and duplicated materials produced by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Among the formats, topics, and titles in this Series are the following: academic program brochures and broadsides; conference brochures; and newsletters, including an alumni newsletter, Views from the Columns, and newsletters from the Design Optimization Laboratory/Design Productivity Center (1985-1987).The series also includes a report, dated 6/1/1901, by Mechanical Engineering Professor C.W. Marx and Agricultural Chemistry Professor Paul Schweitzer, titled "The Heating Values and Proximate Analyses of Missouri Coal".

Series 10. - C:9/11/12 (A09-12)
This Series contains professional papers from Professor of Mechanical Engineering Eastman Smith, (1953-1991). The records consist of research data, correspondence, and patent documents concerning Smith's eyesight-refraction testing instrument, the Xactometer. The Series also includes the prototype and additional parts for the Xactometer. There are also a few records related to Professor Smith's teaching in the College of Engineering, including a Mechanical Engineering Seminar handout (1953).

Note to Researcher: Professor Eastman Smith was Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering from 1945 until his retirement in 1964. Eastman worked with MU faculty member Milton D. Overholser (Department of Anatomy) on research into eye-muscle tension and the curvature of the cornea and this research is documented in records in this Series.
