Chemistry Professor Lloyd B. Thomas
Lloyd B. Thomas, courtesy of UMC Chemistry Department

Record Group: 6 C
Record Sub-Group: 42
Records Title: UMC; College of Arts and Science; Department of Chemistry; Lloyd B. Thomas Papers
Dates: 1937-1990
Volume: 4 cubic feet, 5 linear feet

Scope and Content Note

(A00-183)
This Record Sub-Group contains laboratory notebooks and other records created by Lloyd B. Thomas and his students during his tenure at the University of Missouri Columbia in the College of Arts and Science Chemistry Department. The Sub-Group concerns accommodation coefficients that exist between various gasses and solid surfaces (A.C.), represents only a portion of Thomas's research interests and publications. The bulk of the collection consists of laboratory notebooks but also includes data work-ups, negatives, transparencies, memoranda, correspondence, copies of publications, outlines, and drafts of research findings.

Provenance Note:

The records within this Sub-Group came from Vince Roach, former student of Thomas and retired chemistry professor from the University of Missouri-Rolla.

Biographical Note:

Lloyd Brewster Thomas was a dedicated teacher, a respected scholar, and a world-renowned researcher (1909-1991). After earning an A.B. in Chemistry (Phi Beta Kappa) at the University of Missouri, Thomas continued his studies, ultimately receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Thomas returned to MU to teach chemistry the summer of 1935 and thus began a long and distinguished career at the Columbia campus of the University of Missouri. Thomas taught continuously (except for two sabbatical leaves in which he accepted visiting professorships at Oxford and Berkeley) until his 1979 retirement, at which time he was named Professor Emeritus. Thomas continued to maintain a presence on campus and was active in the Chemistry Department up until his death in 1991.

In addition to being a respected teacher, Thomas was a highly regarded researcher whose contributions to the field of chemistry include groundbreaking research on the effect that various gases exert on accommodation of solid surfaces. In honor of his contributions to the University of Missouri-Columbia, The Lloyd B. Thomas Lecture and Performance Series and the Lloyd B. Thomas Chemistry Scholars Program were established.

Series Descriptions:

This Record Sub-Group is divided in to two record series. Series One contains the notebooks and records of Lloyd B. Thomas and each are chronologically arranged. Series Two includes the notebooks and records of students of Lloyd B. Thomas whose research correlated with Thomas's A.C. research. These records are arranged first by the chronological start date of the individual student. All records of that student are then chronologically maintained within that order.

Series Outline:

  1. Series One - Lloyd B. Thomas Research Notebooks and Records

  2. Series Two - Student Research Notebooks and records
