Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group holds records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of English. Included in the Sub-Group are correspondence files, building renovation and space allocation records, course proposals, a Black Studies Program proposal, committee records, employment inquiries, administrative forms, enrollment statistics, program requirements, departmental meeting minutes, budget materials, faculty rosters, information on televised course offerings, Board of Student Publications records, microfilmed documents and publications, and student poetry, criticism, and short fiction submitted to Department of English writing contests. The Sub-Group also holds records of the Missouri Review.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:6/20/5 and C:6/20/7 (A75-3; A80-46; A90-113)
This Series contains office files of former Chairs of the UMC Department of English (ca. 1947-1984). The bulk of the Series was created during the tenures of Department Chairs Charles M. Hudson (1965-1966) and Howard J. Fulweiler (1967-1971). Included in this Series are correspondence files, building renovation and space allocation records, course proposals, a Black Studies Program proposal, committee records, employment inquiries, administrative forms, enrollment statistics, program requirements, materials from the Midwest chapter of the Modern Languages Association, departmental meeting minutes, budget materials, faculty rosters, information on televised course offerings, and Board of Student Publications records.

Series 2. - C:6/20/1A
This Series contains copies of UMC Department of English writing contest prize-winning entries (ca. 1905-1953). Included in this Series are fourteen reels of 35mm microfilm on which the works of winners of several poetry, fiction, and critical essay contests sponsored or co-sponsored by the English Department are included.

Series 3. - C:6/20/11 (A86-64; A87-80; A89-27)
This Series holds records of the UMC Department of English (ca. 1984-1989). Included in this Series are lists of winners and winning entries for such English Department sponsored writing competitions as the Mahan Short Story Contest, Mahan Poetry Contest, Freshman Short Story Contest, Sibyl Pommer Poetry Competition, and Marjorie McKinney Short Fiction Contest.

Series 4. - C:6/20/12 (A86-54)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of English (ca. 1958-1965). Included in this Series are printed collections of themes written by UMC students in Freshman English and Composition courses. Themes included range from those which earned the lowest possible grade to those which received the highest. They were used as examples of entry level writing at UMC.

Series 5. - C:6/20/13 and C:6/20/13A (A86-54)
This Series holds memorabilia of the UMC Department of English (ca. 1905-1935). Included in the Series is a copy of a 1923 volume, Verse 1905-1923' Written by Students of the University of Missouri, published by the Gamma Phi Psi chapter of the Sigma Upsilon honors fraternity and edited by Florien Gass. Also included in the Series are copies of the 1935 publication, Poems by Missouri Students, edited by Professor Robert L. Ramsey and consisting of poems submitted to the Mahan Poetry contest from 1930 through 1935. Professor Ramsey contributes a preface that describes the history of the Mahan contest.

Series 6. - C:6/20/15 (A13-27)
This Series contains administrative and other records of the Missouri Review, (1978-1993, 1997, 2007, 2010). The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, interviews, research files, manuscript drafts, and printed and duplicated material. The material in this Series originated with Jo Sapp, one of the editors of the Missouri Review, and includes much correspondence with authors as well as a number of files related to her bibliographical survey project of fiction in the Missouri Review. Sapp served the Missouri Review as fiction advisor, as Special Projects editor starting in 1982, and finally as Associate Editor. She received both a Bachelor of Arts (1976) and Master of Arts (1982) in English from the University of Missouri.

This Series contains administrative records of the Missouri Review, (1998-2001, 2009-2015). The records consist of the academic personnel records [RESTRICTED], including personnel action forms, for two of the Missouri Review's Managing Editors.

Series 8. - C:6/20/17 (A17-41)
This Series contains administrative records, (1946-2015), from the Department of English in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri. The records consists entirely of personnel files [RESTRICTED] for terminated faculty, and may include such things as personnel search records, curriculum vita, copies of publications, fellowship and grant records, correspondence, sabbatical leave reports, salary recommendations, teacher and course evaluations, awards and honors records, and annual updates.
