Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources' Department of Rural Sociology. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, meeting minutes, working papers, research reports, program descriptions, fee reimbursement records, professional conference reports, research notes, progress reports, questionnaires, annual work plans, data printouts, mailing lists, pamphlets, bulletins, and copies of published works by faculty members.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:3/31/2
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Rural Sociology (1934-1959). Included in this Series are program descriptions, course notes, fee reimbursement files, and other administrative materials generated by the Rural Public Welfare Short Course Project, a Depression-era effort to train county level relief workers.

Series 2. - C:3/31/6 (A83-88)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Rural Sociology (1935-1970). This Series contains off prints, reprints, and research files, as well as reports, minutes, and working papers of the North Central Regional Committee on Rural Sociology. The reprints and offprints are not limited to issues in Missouri but cover regional, national, and international issues. The following topics are addressed: medical care, mental health, agriculture, rural communities, religious services, among many others. Some materials in this Series were written by faculty member, Robert L. McNamara. Aging population, children of broken homes, and health insurance organizations are subjects analyzed in his publications.

Series 3. - C:3/31/5 (A76-58)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Rural Sociology (1937). Included in this Series is a copy of a bound report entitled Proceedings of the First Mid-Western Conference of Rural Population Research. This conference was sponsored by the UMC College of Agriculture and the U. S. Department of Agriculture and was attended by representatives from twelve regional state universities and colleges. Topics of the conference included population migration, population composition, and regional considerations of population.

This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Rural Sociology (1955-1966). Included in this Series are correspondence, research notes, progress reports, questionnaires, annual work plans, data printouts, mailing lists, pamphlets, and bulletins pertaining to federally-funded research projects in the area of marketing meat products. Titles of project reports include, "Human Factors Affecting Food Selections and Consumption Patterns and Their Relationship to the Market," and "Basic Images of Meat as a Food Product."

Series 5. - C:3/31/3 (A74-28)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Rural Sociology (1962-1964). Included in this Series is a copy of a study entitled Study of Communication and Adoption of the Idea of Cooperative Advertising by the American Dairy Association, 1962-1964. Much of this study is the work of Rural Sociology Professor, Rex Campbell. It is composed of project plans, questionnaires, statistical data, and interview summaries.

This Series contains research and other records of the Department of Rural Sociology at the University of Missouri, (1979-2005). The records pertain to a range of research topics pursued by members of the department and consist of proposals, grant funding, project reports, presentations, survey instruments, and printed and duplicated material. Topics in Series 11 include Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), agricultural cooperatives, pesticides and ground water, the Missouri Special Area Land Treatment (SALT) Program, watersheds, private farming in Kazakhstan, Missouri landowners, and soil conservation.
