Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records created by the Office of the Director of the University of Missouri-Columbia Libraries. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, reports, memos, telegrams, budgetary documents, part-time employee records, job applications and related correspondence, academic personnel records, statistics, grants, proposals, program documentation, committee meeting minutes, clippings, newsletters, manuals, and lists of acquisitions and holdings. Topics include book ordering, book binding, rare book collections, position descriptions, state appropriations, circulation control, circulation statistics, use of computers and "flexowriters," microfilming of card catalogs, interlibrary loans, branch and department libraries, professional organizations and associations, and the development of the LUMIN OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). This Sub-Group also contains architect animations and event audio-visual records.

This Series contains correspondence and office working files, (ca. 1926-1984), created during the tenures of UMC Library Directors Henry O. Severance (1907-1937), Benjamin E. Powell (1937-1946), Ralph H. Parker (1947-1970), Dwight O. Tuckwood (1972-1977), John H. Gribben (1977-1982), Thomas W. Shaughnessy (1982-1989), and Martha Alexander Bowman (1989-2002). Topics of correspondence include book ordering, book binding, rare book collections, state appropriations, circulation control, use of computers and "flexowriters," microfilming of card catalogs, interlibrary loans, branch and department libraries, professional organizations, and the development of the LUMIN OPAC. Also included in this Series are reports to the Director, telegrams, holdings lists, budget documents, and circulation statistics.

This Series contains microfilmed records of the University of Missouri Library employees, part-time (1945-1953) and full-time (up to 1955).

This Series contains 16mm microfilmed correspondence records, (1943-1957). Topics included are appointees, publishers, and professional organizations and associations. These records are arranged alphabetically.

Series 7. - C:20/1/7 (A00-137)
This Series contains the working files of the Director of the University Libraries regarding the development of a proposed Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy Branch Library, (1982-1993). Included in the Series are feasibility and title holdings reports, proposals and requests for the development of the branch, correspondence between administrators and faculty regarding the creation of the branch library, and chronologies and supporting documentation for the long proposed and never realized branch library project.

Series 8 - C:20/1/8 (A00-184)
This Series contains plaques commemorating awards to library staff members, (1984-1999). The bulk of the plaques in this Series display brass-colored name plates for Outstanding Library Student Assistant of the Year, Outstanding Staff Member of the Year, and Outstanding Staff Member of the Year with Less that 5 Years of Service. Two of the plaques consist of photographs of the honored recipients with their certificates.

Series 12. - C:20/1/12 (A02-118)
This Series contains four videotapes pertaining to the MU Libraries' Director's Office during the tenure of Martha Alexander, (02/20/1992 and 02/22/1993). The first pair of videotapes concern a teleconference recording of a meeting of the Curators' Advisory Committee on Telecommunications Technology, anchored at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL), (02/20/1992). The meeting was chaired by the President of the Board of Curators, James L. McHugh, and other Curators were present at various locations. The purpose of the Committee was: to instruct and advise the Board of Curators on telecommunications technology as it applies to UM; to recommend policy positions to the Board of Curators on the application of technology to the UM System in accordance with its missions; to recognize the potential for technology integration within the UM System; to recognize the potential for economic advancement for the state of Missouri; and to invite industry representatives to report on emerging technology as it might relate to the UM System. The meeting had several speakers, including Dr. Donald Lindbergh, Director of the National Library of Medicine and former UMC faculty member, to discuss libraries and information delivery advances through technology. Each of the two videotapes is 50 minutes long. The second pair of videotapes concern a teleconference recording of a presentation by Library Systems Office Executive Director, George Rickerson, to UM System and campus administrators and library and information professionals from other state units, (02/22/1993). The meeting took place at the University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL) and was sponsored by the UM System Library Directors, UM Library Systems Office, and the UM Client-Server Task Force. This presentation grew out of the UM System Integrated Library Technology Five-Year Plan. The two videotapes are 50 minutes each and consist of a presentation by Rickerson and the answering of questions.

Series 13 - C:20/1/13 (A03-4)
This Series consists of 19 completed faculty library surveys, (06/1987). This questionnaire was "part of a study of the impressions and opinions of the users of the UMC Libraries." The Collection Development Committee of MU Libraries sponsored the survey, and the results were to be used in "helping formulate collection development policies" for the libraries.

Note to Archivist: The results of this survey were never condensed into an official report, therefore, the completed questionnaires were kept for preservation.

This Series contains administrative records created and received by the Office of the Director of MU Libraries, (1970-2004). The majority of the records originate from the period Martha Alexander Bowman served as Director of Libraries. The records include the following types and topics: correspondence and memoranda; meeting agendas, minutes, and supplemental material; annual reports; copyright; grants; library and campus committees; Library Council and Executive Committee; library administrative divisions and branches; library collections; publications; library events, including faculty library orientation, retirement receptions, the Book Sale, and the Annual Luncheon; serials cancellation; salaries and wages; University of Missouri Libraries Depository; regional and national associations; library material selection; position searches [RESTRICTED]; and the Stuckey Essay Contest.

This Series contains audio-visual records from the Office of the Director of MU Libraries, (2002-2007). The records consist of video tapes of news coverage of the Nutter Family donation and the Nutter Information Commons, animation sequences and renderings for the Information Commons, and video of the Information Commons dedication. The Series also contains digital photographs for the Art of the Book Exhibit reception and gallery tour and for the T. C. Boyle lecture reception. A video from the Capstone Marketing Campaign during Winter Semester 2006 is also part of this Series.
