Record Group: 2 C
Record Sub-Group: 7
Records Title: UMC; University Faculty; University Clubs; Fortnightly Club Records
Dates: 1948-1994, 2006
Volume: 2 cubic feet, 2.5 linear feet

Scope and Content Note

(A97-38; A21-76)
This Record Sub-Group contains files of the University of Missouri-Columbia Fortnightly Club, a social organization originally open to the wives of UMC faculty, and later to women faculty and staff as well. Included in this Sub-Group is a history of the club; its constitution and by-laws; copies of the newsletter, Fortnightly Bulletin; program booklets; lists of members; club presidents' files; correspondence, including invitations; short history of the club's brass items which were donated to, and later returned by, the Museum of Art and Archaeology; information detailing the 1991 gala held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Fortnightly Club; the club's budgets and annual reports, records relating to miscellaneous club programs; and the ledgers and notebooks kept by the club secretaries and treasurers.
Note to Researcher: Formerly held in the Western Historical Manuscript Collection, the State Historical Society of Missouri has 14 folders and 3 volumes of materials pertaining to the Fortnightly Club, 1894-1979.
Note to Archivist: C:2/9/2 was initially an unprocessed (NP) collection and the original Kardex card indicated three accessions: A97-36, A97-37, and A97-38. Based on the Accession Register, however, it seems that only A97-38 contained Fortnightly Club records, so when A21-76 was added in December 2021, A97-36 and A97-37 were removed from this inventory.

Historical Note:

In October 1892, Mrs. Frederick C. Hicks established the Fortnightly Club to organize faculty wives and to "build community resources and good will at the University." The first meeting was held on October 2, 1892 and Mrs. R.H. Jesse was named the honorary president of the club. The group met fortnightly, or every two weeks. There were twenty members the first year, and today, there are nearly four hundred. Initially, the organization studied Shakespeare and literature, but throughout the years, the focus has changed to include suffrage, social and educational legislation, and community improvement.

Series Descriptions:

This Sub-group is divided into thirteen separate records series. Arrangement within each series is primarily chronological.

Series One contains two booklets published in 1967 commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Fortnightly Club. Included are a history of the club, description of activities, and a listing of officers.

Series Two consists of the Fortnightly Constitution and By-Laws (1949, 1959, and 1959 marked with changes from 1964 and 1965) in booklet form, the Constitution and By-Laws from 1967-1991 in copy form, and the 1970 Committee Assignments booklet.
