Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia's University Relations Division. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, administrative records, event records, photographs, photographic negatives, photographic slides, news releases, news articles, newsletters, magazines, statistical data, reports, video tapes, audio tapes, and optical discs.

Historical Note:

The University Relations Division was formerly known as the Office of Public Information and Publications. From 1963 through 1968, the Office of Public Information managed the publicity for the Columbia campus and for the UM-System. In 1968, University Information Services became a separate entity which handled publicity for the UM-System. Those records may be found at Record Group 4 UW, Sub-Group 74.

This Series contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia Office of University Relations (1923-1982 with significant gaps, e.g. 1925-1927 missing). Included in this Series are microfilm copies of news releases issued by the UMC Office of Public Information (later renamed University Relations Division). Topics in the Series include: student, staff, and faculty activities, commencements, Honor Roll listings, Board of Curators decisions, and results of research projects. Also included in this Series are microfilm copies of the O.P.I. publication Potpourri (1979-1982).

This Series contains publications of the University of Missouri-Columbia's Office of University Relations (1981-). Included in this Series are copies of a newsletter entitled Potpourri, a digest of news releases issued by University Relations. The name of this publication was changed in 1983 to UMC Calendar of Public Events. Also included in this Series are copies of a newsletter entitled Short Shots, a summary of the activities and achievements of UMC faculty and professional staff.

This Series contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia's Office of University Relations relating to the development of a nuclear research reactor facility for the University of Missouri, now called MURR (1957-1968). Included in this Series are correspondence, informational flyers, news releases, newspaper clippings, reports, brochures, research proposals, and handbooks concerning radiological operations and procedures. The majority of these materials were gathered and organized by Ollie Fink, a staff writer for UMC's Office of Public Information (which later became the Office of University Relations).

This Series contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia's Office of University Relations (1991). Included in this Series is a video recording of a UMC hosted event honoring U.S. Senator, Stuart Symington. The video is entitled "Tribute to Senator Stuart Symington: Missouri Statesman" and includes participants such as UMC Chancellor Haskell Monroe, Missouri Governor John Ashcroft, Senator Thomas F. Eagleton, Thomas J. Watson, Jr., and James W. Symington. Also included in this Series are a program, invitations, and newspaper clippings relating to the event.

Also included in the Series is a video recording of a television news spot covering UMC's 1967 University Day.

Titles found in Series 19 are University News Letter, Press Bulletin of the University of Missouri, University of Missouri News Service, and The University of Missouri Press Bulletin. A few issues from 1905 through 1907 carry the same date but have different content.

Series 23. - C:1/141/26
This Series contains printed and duplicated materials issued by University Relations, (1974-). Materials include Columns: News from Columbia Campus, Missouri, Mizzou Media Guide, MU in the News, Educating Missouri to a Higher Degree, University of Missouri Stylebook, and Show Me Mizzou. The Series also includes a University News Bureau-compiled sampling of news clippings related to the research of Dr. Randy Prather, MU Distinguished Professor of Reproductive Biotechnology, (2002), and a press release regarding the introduction of courses on FORTRAN and COBOL, (1965). Also included are materials related to the Mizzou Speakers Bureau and the Office of Visitor Relations, as well as information on films produced by University Relations and University Information Services.

Series 26. - C:1/141/19
This Series contains publications of the University of Missouri-Columbia's Office of Public Information (1949-1953). The Series consists of copies of the newspaper publication entitled University of Missouri News. The purpose of the illustrated publication was "to present information about the University's activities and services conducted on the campuses at Rolla and Columbia, and throughout the state." Topics covered in the issues include state-wide alumni activities, conference meetings and other events on campus, budget and appropriation news, gifts and grants received by UMC, student activities (such as Journalism Week, Engineering Week, Homecoming, Law Day and Farmers' Fair), and faculty and administration appointments.

This Series contains administrative and photographic records created and received by the Office of Visitor Relations in University Affairs at the University of Missouri, (1980-1996). The records pertain to two display cases outside the auditorium in Jesse Hall, including documentation of initial purchase and subsequent displays, (1983-1994). The Series also contains miscellaneous photographic slides of buildings and events on the Columbia campus, including homecoming decorations, (1996), summer repertory theatre, (1983), exterior of Pickard Hall, (1980), Stanley Hall entrance, Lowry Mall, the Columns, 8th Street Avenue of the Columns street sign, exterior University Hospital sign, Marching Mizzou, Switzler bell tower, and Lowry Hall renovation.

The records consist of audiotapes, videotapes, film, and photographs that pertain to the following topics: Geyer Awards, Chancellor's update, Summer Welcome, public service announcements, promotional material, the School of Journalism, graduation, Rothwell and Brewer renovation and additions, strategic planning, Miss America, Founders' Day, Plant Science Center, Norm Stewart, sports, Mizzou Advantage, Spotlight on Science, Joy of Discovery artwork installation dedication, etc. The Series also includes a number of non-audio-visual items such as a Graduate Exit Survey, (2012), and alumni directories.

Series 33. - C:1/141/34 (A14-54)
This Series contains printed and duplicated material and photographic material created and received by the Office of Public Information, (ca. 1933-1978). The records all pertain to Frederick Middlebush and consist of press releases, (1953-1978), photographic prints and negatives, (ca. 1933-1954), a program and invitation to the dedication of a painted portrait of Middlebush, (1954), a short curriculum vitae of Middlebush, and other miscellaneous printed and duplicated materials. Among the photographic material are images of Middlebush at various events, including the dedication of KOMU and the dedication of a portrait of Middlebush, as well as with various people, including Isidor Loeb and Elmer Ellis. The Series also contains copies of two articles about Middlebush, one from a 1954 issue of the Missouri Alumnus and one from The Jefferson Quill of the spring of 1977.

This Series contains audio-visual and other records created and received by University Relations (ca. 1988-2014). The records consist of a variety of video tapes and optical discs pertaining to public relations and development.
