Scope and Content Note

(A02-50)
This Record Sub-Group is an artificial collection of five portraits transferred from the department of Special Collections in Ellis Library. At some point in time, all of these paintings were hanging in Ellis Library. Most of the painters are known: Warren F. Ludwig of St. Louis painted Luther Defoe and Eva Johnston; John Ankeney created the portrait of Richard Jesse; and F. H. Morse memorialized Joseph Norwood. The artist for the remaining portrait of Walter Williams has not been identified.

Painting 1 - Oil portrait of Luther M. "Daddy" Defoe, 38"x46", 1926
QEBH raised the funds for the Defoe artwork, which was presented at Homecoming, 1926.

Painting 2 - Oil portrait of Richard H. Jesse, 36"x24", 1909
Alpha Phi Sigma presented this portrait to the University in 1910.
